What is movement retraining?

Movement retraining focuses on correcting dysfunctional posture and compensatory movement patterns so horses can move with better balance, strength, and comfort. First, the horse is evaluated for restrictions, weakness, and instability—especially in the thoracic sling, topline, and spinal column. Then, targeted in-hand and under-saddle exercises are implemented to teach the horse how to move with proper biomechanics. This not only improves the horse's overall movement patterns, but it can also help horses that have been struggling with painful conditions such as kissing spine. Vicke McCall's approach to movement retraining originated from a successful case study involving a horse with severe kissing spine, who returned to comfortable under‑saddle work after focused retraining. Vicke's method has helped horses of all breeds and disciplines develop improved posture, stride quality, core engagement, and overall stability. Many horses show visible changes within a month, including better topline development, improved balance, and more functional movement patterns.

What horses can benefit from movement retraining?

Movement retraining can help any horse! This program has successfully worked with horses of all kinds, from OTTBs to top-level competition horses. Movement retraining has been especially helpful for horses suffering from conditions like kissing spine. It teaches them how to carry themselves with proper posture, thus relieving any unnecessary pressure on their spine.

What issues does movement retraining solve?

Movement retraining is great for horses experiencing: • Lameness and gait abnormalities • Weakness, stiffness, or reduced mobility • Chronic discomfort from kissing spine • Stiffness • Balance issues • Recovery from musculoskeletal injuries • Overall decline in performance

How soon can I expect to see results in my horse?

Most horses will have visible changes within a month of starting a movement retraining program. Every horse is different, and some may take longer than others to experience visible changes. The important thing is to stay consistent with your horse's training, and focus on proper execution of the exercises. Don't rush your horse and take your time to get it right before moving on to the next lesson.

Testimonials

My OTTB has kissing spine and Vicke has helped me learn how to help him. The movement training session was SO HELPFUL! She tailored it to my horse's needs, abilities, and challenges, showing me what to do and then coaching me through it. Not only will these ground exercises help strengthen my bond with my horse, but I'm confident he will be stronger and happier as well. Thank you for everything you do, Vicke!
