What is movement retraining?

Movement retraining can benefit any horse by improving static and dynamic posture, stability, balance, and suppleness. Many horses develop dysfunctional movement patterns because they never establish the strength, coordination, and balance needed to support themselves correctly both vertically and horizontally. As a result, they may struggle to properly align and stabilize their spine during movement. When a horse lacks good postural alignment and balance, excess stress is placed on the soft tissues and skeletal system, often leading to body soreness and compensation patterns over time. This course is designed to help you identify these dysfunctional movement patterns and use targeted exercises to activate and strengthen areas that have become weak or underused. The goal is to help your horse develop better posture, move with greater comfort, and achieve improved balance and stability.

What horses can benefit from movement retraining?

Movement retraining can help any horse, from OTTBs to high-level competition horses. It is especially helpful for horses with complex movement issues, including conditions such as kissing spine. The program focuses on improving how the horse organizes and carries itself, developing better posture, balance, and coordination to reduce unnecessary strain on the body. Many horses Vicke has worked with have been sent to her as a last by owners who felt they had tried everything without lasting results.

What issues does movement retraining solve?

Movement retraining is great for horses experiencing: • Dysfunctional movement patterns • Poor topline development • Hindend weakness • Back and body soreness • Thoracic sling weakness • Anxiousness • Behavioral problems ie. bucking, rearing, spinning, refusal to move • Weakness and lack of stability • Reduced mobility • Stiffness • Balance issues • Recovery from musculoskeletal injuries (if approved by vet) • Performance problems • Tripping/stabby toe first landing

How soon can I expect to see results in my horse?

This depends on the individual horse, how long the movement dysfunction has been present, the skill of the handler, and the consistency of the training. In many cases, Vicke sees visible changes in posture and movement within a single session. However, for someone new to this approach, it takes time to develop the feel and coordination needed to apply the patterns effectively. Once the fundamentals are in place and the patterns are being performed with some consistency, noticeable changes often appear within just a few sessions. Improvements are not only physical but many horses also show changes in their mental and emotional state as they discover a new way of moving and become more connected and present.

Testimonials

My OTTB has kissing spine and Vicke has helped me learn how to help him. The movement training session was SO HELPFUL! She tailored it to my horse's needs, abilities, and challenges, showing me what to do and then coaching me through it. Not only will these ground exercises help strengthen my bond with my horse, but I'm confident he will be stronger and happier as well. Thank you for everything you do, Vicke!
